Portugal’s Digital Future in Focus: Roundtable with the Secretary of State in New York

The Portugal-US Chamber of Commerce organized an exclusive roundtable in New York City with Portugal’s Secretary of State for Digitalisation, Bernardo Correia, in collaboration with AICEP.

The discussion, “The Transatlantic Partnership in the Digital Era: Strategic Alignment for the US Market,” gathered a select group of Portuguese business leaders to exchange perspectives on how artificial intelligence and digital transformation can drive innovation, competitiveness, and international growth for Portuguese companies.

Today, we share some of the key takeaways from this productive meeting:

  1. Government Plans on AI and Digital Transformation
    The Secretary of State outlined the Government’s strategic vision to leverage AI and IT initiatives to enhance public sector efficiency and service quality. These efforts are set to accelerate following the appointment of a national Government CTO, tasked with driving technological modernization across departments.

  2. Shared Entrepreneurial Experiences
    Portuguese founders shared insights from their journeys, highlighting Portugal's strong talent pool, as well as the challenges and opportunities of expanding operations into the US market.

  3. Fundraising Opportunities and Support
    The roundtable explored examples of successful fundraising rounds by Portuguese startups in the US and examined how Government entities, AICEP, and the Portugal-US Chamber of Commerce can play a greater role in supporting companies seeking international investment.

  4. Data Center Development and Economic Value
    The group examined strategies for Portugal to capture greater economic value from the construction and operation of data centers, emphasizing local benefit and sustainable growth.

  5. Ethics and Regulation in AI
    The conversation also addressed AI ethics and regulation, with the Secretary of State outlining the Government’s approach to ensuring responsible innovation while maintaining public trust in emerging technologies.

The roundtable highlighted Portugal’s ambition to strengthen its technological ecosystem, promote international growth for startups, and ensure ethical, sustainable digital innovation.
